In this episode of The Rut we sit down with ex-Wasps rugby back-row forward, Alex Rieder, who tells us how he grew up with a ‘thick upper lip’ mentality having brushed off little setbacks here and there. Then at the age of 26, during a game against Harlequins, Alex suffered a severe shoulder injury. After months of recovery he was ready to play again, but his first game back against Exeter Chiefs didn’t go to plan, Alex suffered a career ending knee injury.
Alex speaks incredibly honestly about the physical and mental toll of his injuries, the battles with his mental health when trying to recover and how the threat of retirement changed his perspective on life.
We recorded this in lockdown.
