In this episode of The Rut, I sit down with professional rugby players Jack Willis and James Gaskell. Jack and James both play for Wasps and have recently both had serious injuries which led to their mental health suffering.
Jack broke into the Wasps 1st team in 2017, tearing up trees in the Premiership leading to him being selected on Englands summer tour of South Africa. However, a week after being selected for England, he suffered a serious knee injury against Saracens in the premiership semi final. He recounts toll it took on his mental health in the weeks after having surgery and struggling to come to terms with being completely immobile. However, after a message from Henry Fraser, he talks about the process of coming to terms with his injury and moving forward with his recovery.
James has played almost 200 premiership games for both Sale and Wasps but recently has had a series of injuries, including a problem with his back which had several complications. They led him to struggle with his mental health, considering whether all of it was worth it?
Here is Jack and James’s stories so please, leave all judgement at the door.
