John Bargh, Professor of Psychology at Yale University: Mental Health and the Unconscious Mind

In this special episode of The Rut, I sit down with the Professor of Psychology at Yale University, John Bargh.

John is an award winning psychologist, author, researcher and has battled with depression himself between 2011-2013. He is one of the world's leading experts in the unconscious mind.

John formed the Automaticity in Cognition, Motivation, and Evaluation (ACME) Laboratory. His work focuses on automaticity and unconscious processing as a method to better understand social behaviour, as well as philosophical topics such as free will. Much of his work investigates whether behaviours thought to be under volitional control may result from automatic interpretations of and reactions to external stimuli, such as words.

John and I talk about the link between mental health issues and the unconscious mind, how different behavioural patterns incite depression and anxiety, and how the inner, unconscious mind works through various triggers.

His book 'Before You Know It' can be bought here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Before-You-Know-Unconscious-Reasons/dp/1785150014
