In this episode of The Rut, I sit down with professional rugby player Jono Kitto who opens up about his incredible story battling depression and anxiety in his teenage years back in New Zealand.
Jono has played for some of the biggest names in English rugby in Leicester Tigers, Harlequins and Worcester Warriors, as well as being capped internationally by New Zealand U20s.
Jono developed a perfectionist complex in his teenage years and this led him to want to take his own life.
Thankfully, he didn’t and after finally talking about his issues, he addressed the underlying complex and now understands fully the series of events which led to the demise of his mental health.
Jono talks me through the range of emotions he encountered when he was in his rut, how a mirror helped him to get out of it, and how one woman’s kindness at a Leicester Tigers game showed him the impact that talking can have on someone.
Here’s Jono’s story so as always, please leave all judgement at the door.
