In this episode of The Rut, I sit down with Head Chef of a top French restaurant in London and amateur rugby player, Louis Bird. We discuss sibling rivalry, being an alcoholic at 18, taking an overdose, and how cooking and rugby has formed the crucial structure in his life for him to recover.
It's a remarkable story. The transition from a few cigarettes and weed in his mid-teens to over a bottle of vodka a day, Louis' addictive personality caused him to go from minor trouble at school to then being arrested for GBH and almost going to prison.
He has since made huge strides in recovery, by finding cooking as his release and purpose, admitting himself into rehab, talking to and finding structure and support from his family, girlfriend and best friends, and using his obsessive character as a strength rather than a flaw.
